How 3D Data Changes the Game for Physical Security

July 14, 2022  |  Gerald Becker

Innovative technology has enhanced physical security through innovative ways of detecting intrusions within a region of interest.  A story that has come to light in the last few years is vigilantes trying to break into gas tanks, following the price surge and it is apparent how these situations could have benefited from a more advanced security system. Specifically, LiDAR technology and how it is impacting how we look at perimeter security, particularly Perimeter Intrusion and Detection Systems (PIDS) for high-security sites.  Let’s examine the current solutions for physical security, their limitations and how 3D LiDAR and the data it generates are changing the game.

Where current physical security solutions needs a hand

Fixed and PTZ (pan, tilt, zoom) cameras, video analytics and other 2D sensor systems lack the much-needed context required on large, complex sites where there is a high volume of passing traffic, whether on foot or vehicular. 2D sensors have uses where large open areas may be present – Passive Infrared and Microwave, for example.

Fixed and PTZ cameras will continue to have their place in PIDS security solutions, and they have until now been widely accepted and adopted. That does not mean they address all of the requirements. Organizations are using Video Analytics (VA) to address some of the shortcomings, but can still benefit from additional insight.

One of the more glaring limitations of the old method is the inability of mesh cameras and video analytics to deliver continuous and unique identification tracking to a centimeter accuracy. For end users, adding more cameras doesn’t always capture the full picture. The trend toward adding additional cameras and video analytics, which is undoubtedly supported by the manufacturers of these products, has led to a rise in the workload for site guards, which in turn increases risk and expenses.

What 3D data offers

Better, more comprehensive views are made possible by 3D sensing, which has a considerably more sophisticated ability to “see” an area than cameras have. LiDAR sensors produce laser beams that travel in all directions, giving them a 360-degree field of view (FoV) that is unaffected by the surrounding environment. With a high degree of accuracy, these laser beams combined with perception software can identify and classify objects as well as determine their location and movement. A 3D point cloud image is created using the aggregate data.

A point cloud is a large data set made up of 3D point data. These point clouds include raw information about the environment that is scanned from moving objects, like cars and people, as well as fixed objects, including trees, buildings and other structures. Perception software can then transform a point cloud into LiDAR-based 3D images of an area, providing spatial location and depth information for the identification, classification and tracking of moving objects.

LiDAR can automate and enhance video-based security systems by integrating with a number of video management systems and using rich 3D object data. The sensors allow security experts to rapidly locate and track any potential security threats, and easy automation of other security resources is made possible by the out-of-the-box integration with video systems

What Quanergy offers

Quanergy offers high-performance 3D LiDAR sensors, along with perception software, to boost performance and safety while cutting costs in a wide range of markets and applications.

For high-security facilities whose only previous option was to use video analytics, fixed and PTZ cameras, and other binary sensor systems, Quanergy’s LiDAR can address several of the flaws in PIDS. The LiDAR solution from Quanergy is distinctive in its foundational technology architecture, and when combined with our Qortex DTC solution, it offers a far better and more affordable option for high-security venues.

The Quanergy QORTEX DTC solution complements the cameras and video analytics, and it marks a shift in how PIDS security is delivered that not only lowers costs but also significantly alters the risk profile on sites.

With a high-resolution, 360-degree field of view, our patented M Series of LiDAR sensors can produce detailed 3D point clouds in real time at a distance. For the most difficult real-world applications that demand the broadest field of view and the greatest range, these high-definition, cost-effective LiDAR sensors provide a tough and dependable option.

Three key takeaways when considering Quanergy solutions:

  • Lower TCO – Quanergy sensors enable end-users to secure more coverage with less technology, allowing for a cost-effective solution built through a system architecture with both LiDAR and cameras.
  • Accuracy – LiDAR can offer surface measurements and an accurate resolution of objects within 3cm and provides precise location data for tracking objects, whether it is for surveillance or business intelligence.
  • No PII/privacy risk – In contrast to cameras, LiDAR poses no risk to Personally Identifiable Information (PII), nor does it capture biometric information

3D LiDAR for the win

Quanergy LiDAR solutions provide the necessary foundation layer and meta data to capture and contextualize all the people and vehicle movement at a site. Due to their constrained FoV and inability to give 360-degree 3D context, using radar-based tools alone are unable to offer LiDAR’s unique technical features and advantages.

We were recently chosen by Audio Technology to provide perimeter intrusion detection to reduce false alarms, provide real-time tracking and classification, all while working under any lighting conditions. “We want to deliver the highest level of protection for critical infrastructure facilities,” said Emad Adly, president, Audio Technology. “Quanergy is providing a 3D LiDAR-based perimeter intrusion detection system (PIDS) to protect a critical infrastructure. They are providing this to a military facility and it is reducing false alarms. The Quanergy technology provides real-time tracking and unmatched accuracy when tracking potential threats.”

The ability to obtain even better classification capabilities will help drive further advancements in the use of Quanergy’s solutions in the high-security market vertical. We plan to enhance existing functionality and introduce new sensors to the market that have even greater coverage spans. We look forward to helping facilitate the best possible security and operations strategy for our customers using 3D LiDAR data.
